According to SEMI, since 2009, installed 200mm (or 8”) fab capacity has increased, and by 2020, 200mm capacity is expected to reach almost 5.7M wafers per month (wpm). By the end of 2017, installed capacity will reach close to 5.4M wpm. Driven by mobile and wireless applications, IOT, and automotive, the 200mm market is thriving. Looking only at IC volume fabs, the report shows 188 fabs in production in 2016 and expanding to 197 fabs by 2021. Taiwan-based embedded NVM IP provider eMemory Technology has signed a 2-year cooperation contract with SK Hynix for providing technology support to the Korea-based electronics firm to develop its wafer foundry business, according to Digitimes. eMemory will receive revenues of NTD180M (USD5.928M) from SK Hynix in 2 years for its technology support. Intel has reportedly eliminated its internal wearables group about 2 weeks ago as part of a transition away from health trackers to more current advanced technologies. Touch Display

Xiaomi has reportedly signed an OLED supply deal with Samsung Display for its flagship smartphone in 2018. Samsung will supply a 6.01” rigid OLED panel for Xiaomi, with the first shipment starting from Dec 2017. AU Optronics (AUO) has secured a total of NTD23B (USD757.528M) in syndicated loans from a banking consortium led by Bank of Taiwan. AUO will use the new funds to finance the second-phase expansion project of its 8.5G plant in Houli, central Taiwan. Largan Precision has announced the acquisition of an existing factory located in Taichung City, central Taiwan, at NTD1.036B (USD34.1M). Biometrics

According to Strategy Analytics, in 2017 852M smartphones shipped with fingerprint recognition functions. Front fingerprint sensors continued to account for the 90% level. Walmart is developing facial recognition technology to detect frustrated or unhappy shoppers.The technology uses video cameras at store checkout lines that monitor customers’ facial expressions and movements to try and identify varying levels of dissatisfaction (CN Beta, BGR, Business Insider, WSJ)

Samsung says it will recover more than 157 tons of gold, silver, cobalt, and copper through the recycling process of its recalled Galaxy Note 7 in 2016. BYD indicates that the main customers for its metal chassis are Samsung, Huawei, vivo, etc.  In nearly 2~3 yers, flagship smartphone’s mainstream is glass cover case plus metal frame, i.e., 3D glass with metal frame. Smartphones

According to Verto Analytics, the phone-based personal assistants see big declines in terms of average monthly users while those that cater to home computing devices grew. As of May 2017, Apple Siri managed to hold on to its position as the most widely used personal assistant.
