Samsung is Aggressive in 2019
In 2018, Samsung’s smartphone shipment reaches 293M units, decline 7.3% from 2017. In 2019, Samsung is expected to ship 284M units, with the decline rate slightly improved.
Samsung’s smartphone portfolio covers every price segment. In addition to J (biggest share), S (flagship), A (mid-to-high), Note (premium), C and On (low-end), Samsung has new series M to cover INR10,000~20,000 for India market. Also, Samsung will aggressive expand it’s a series, aiming to bring premium features to A series.
Samsung will adopt aggressively under-display fingerprint technology, with 15%~17% (about 50M~60M units) of its 2019 shipment to be equipped with under-display fingerprint scanner. Samsung will allegedly launch 3 Galaxy A-series phones with under-display fingerprint scanners in 2019.
Samsung’s tri-cam smartphone share is expected to reach 20% in 2019, and 30% in 2020. In addition to flagships S and Note series, after A9 (24MP+8MP+10MP+5MP) and A8s (24MP+10MP+5MP), majority A series in M series in 2019 would be equipped with (at least) tri-cam. This shows Samsung’s strategy with multiple-cam solutions.
The penetration rate of foldable phone is estimated to reach 1.5% in 2021, increase from mere 0.1% in 2019. Samsung Galaxy Fold will be shipped to the market in Apr 2019, priced at $1,980 or €2,000. Samsung is forecast to ship 1M Galaxy Fold in 2019. Samsung is reportedly working on a pair of new foldable smartphones to follow its Galaxy Fold. It is said to be developing a clamshell-like device, and another that folds away from the user.
