6-17 Week: Another week with tidal wave of info–Apple WWDC 2016; Rumored Apple dual-cam iPhone is cancelled; Rumored Samsung to use Tizen for all its devices; etc.
Another week, another wave of information:
- Headlines: Apple announces iOS 10, macOS (new name for OS X), watchOS 3, and tvOS; Apple iPhone 7 is rumored will not be coming with dual-cameras due to technical difficulties; Motorola officially says that the Moto X is “alive and well”; Microsoft will acquire LinkedIn in an all-cash transaction worth USD26.2 billion; Samsung is considering expanding the use of its Tizen in all company devices; Uniloc sues WeChat (owned by Tencent) in U.S. for patent infringement; OnePlus more affordable offering, the OnePlus X, will not have a follow-up model;
- Components: TSMC 7nm process has signed more than 20 contracts; Samsung Electronics will be TSMC major competitor in the 7nm process segment; 1Q16/2Q16 TSMC and UMC production capacity is tight; Micron delays closing acquisition of Inotera; NXP Semiconductors said it would sell its standard products business to a consortium of financial investors in China;
- New Technologies: : Glass particles in liquid could lead to hologram displays; Apple granted 2 new patents—Transparent electronic device and Electronic device with wrap around display; Columbia University has developed a new method to fight VR sickness;
- New Numbers: SEMI forecasts 19 new fabs and lines begin construction in 2016-2017, 10 of which is built in China; Samsung Display OLED shipments were at 86.7 million in 1Q16; Samsung Galaxy S7 series sold 24-25 million units for 1H16; Huawei has shipped over 2.6 million units of its P9 and P9 Plus; OPPO F1 Plus has sold 7 million units so far; only 1% of the 1.43 billion PCs used globally are ready to play VR games; Worldwide shipments of wearable devices are expected to reach 101.9 million units by the end of 2016;
- New Products: Honor 5A and 5C; Meizu m3s; Xiaomi Redmi 3S and 3X; OnePlus 3; etc.
