The jointly-developed LTPS panel of Hon Hai Precision (Foxconn) and Innolux has reportedly been validated by Apple’s iPhone in-cell certification. Samsung’s LED business unit from the Device Solutions (DS) division is recruiting research and development (R&D) employees with experience from the 1~22 Nov 2016. U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has developed a way to convert sewage sludge into a form of crude oil called biocrude by pumping it through a pressurized tube. David Hsu from “Semiconductor Engineering” has an article discussing fingerprint recognition technology. Several factors contribute to fingerprint technology’s popularity over other biometrics: 1) it is recognized as a legal representation of a person’s signature; 2) its reliability as a fingerprint pattern does not change over a person’s lifetime; and, 3) the required low hardware cost and high portability — it only takes 120~ 180Byte (~1kbit) of memory to store a set of unique features (minutiae) that represents a fingerprint. Apple has a secret office in Cambridge, UK where it is working on Siri, the company’s AI-powered personal assistant. It is home to less than 30 people, including employees from VocalIQ — a voice recognition startup that was spun out from the university and acquired by Apple in 2015 for up to USD100M. Facebook unveiled its open source telecom hardware designed to link data centers using a high-speed optical networking system that can cover large geographical distances. The device, called Voyager, is an optical switch described as the first “white box” transponder for Open Packet DWDM optical networks. Samsung Electronics is set to unveil its Tizen operating system for the Internet of Things as early as the end of 2016. The consumer market is also seeing a new level of interest in robotics, as the industry is invaded by the next wave of so-called personal assistant robots or social robots for the home.
