Apple’s patent application titled “System and method for vehicle authorization” considers ways to have an iPhone to unlock and pay for a ‘Project Titan’ self-driving car. The first element it focuses on is positioning. Thailand has launched a Huawei 5G test bed. According to Minister of Digital Economy Pichet Durongkaveroj, Thailand’s cooperation with Huawei on the test bed does not mean it is not concerned about security issues. Huawei is reportedly in talks with telecoms operators, such as Advanced Info Service Pcl and TRUE, to secure local partnerships ahead of a national rollout scheduled for Dec 2020. According to Canalys, smartphone shipments in India were up by more than 12M at 137M in 2018, the best growth of any market in absolute volume terms. India now accounts more than 10% of the world’s smartphone market, up from 6% 5 years ago. According to Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi, only about 16% of Apple iPhone in use now are likely to be upgraded fiscal year 2019. He added that iPhone owners who bought them new are likely to hold on to them for at least 4 years, and the replacement rate could soon get even longer. A report released by The German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz) reveals the amount of radiation emitted by some newer and older smartphone models. The data is released in watts per kilogram with the “safer” phones reporting lower scores. Google has announced it has paid out over USD15M since launching its bug bounty program in Nov 2010. In 2018 alone, the company distributed USD3.4M to 317 different security researchers, slightly up from the USD2.9M it gave to 274 researchers the year before.
